Crowns

A crown is used to protect the remaining tooth structure when a filling or fracture is too large. Generally crowns are used when more conservative options will fail if the tooth has become irreversibly weakened. Crowns are also used following root canal treatment on back teeth.

In modern dentistry crowns are usually made in white, metal free ceramic materials (EMAX/Zirconia) but there are still occasions when your dentist may advise gold or metal. Crowns are custom made to fit the tooth perfectly. A digital scan is made of the tooth and sent to the technician to be fabricated, between visits temporary crowns are fitted and the process takes around 2 weeks.

With good oral hygiene and care crowns will last many years. Metal free ceramic crowns start from £745.

Onlays

Onlays are a relatively modern concept in dentistry and offer a more conservative option than a crown if there is sufficient healthy tooth remaining. Onlays are usually made in composite, ceramic or gold and they fit over the top of a tooth to protect against fracture or following a root canal treatment.

Onlays are only used on the back teeth and the process is the same as a crown. A ceramic onlay costs from £745.

Veneers

Where a tooth is damaged, discoloured, misshapen or there are undesirable spaces between the teeth then veneers may be the answer.

A veneer is made from similar ceramics to crowns and made to cover the front of the tooth making it much more conservative than a crown. Veneers can improve the cosmetic appearance of the teeth by changing the colour, shape and position of your teeth.

Veneers are also an alternative treatment to tooth straightening where only mild crowding is present. Veneers do require some preparation of the teeth and a digital scan. Like crowns there is around a 2 week turnaround period where temporaries are fitted. The cost of a veneer is from £750, increasing to £995 for highly aesthetic feldspathic porcelain.
