Dental Hygiene and Oral Health

At Romsey Dental Care prevention of dental disease is at the core of everything we do. It is essential to maintain good oral health by looking after your teeth day-to-day and with the help of our skilled hygienists and therapists we can help you achieve a healthy mouth.

Visiting the dental hygienist at Romsey Dental Care can help you recognise, reduce and
prevent problems such as decay, gingivitis and gum disease.

To book an appointment call 01794 522222 or email enquiries@romseydentalcare.co.uk

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay causes holes in the teeth that can lead to toothache requiring fillings and possibly extraction. Tooth decay is a preventable disease caused by plaque and frequent sugar in the diet.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a disease which causes the gums to become red, swollen and bleed when brushing. It too is preventable and thankfully, can be reversed by improved cleaning. In some cases, gingivitis can progress to more serious gum disease.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial condition caused by plaque which leads to inflammation of the gums and bleeding. Unlike gingivitis gum disease causes pockets (gaps between the tooth and gum), gum recession (where the roots are exposed leading to sensitive teeth), bone loss (the jaw bone is destroyed) and eventually loss of the teeth. Gum disease can also cause bad breath.

Risk factors such as smoking and uncontrolled diabetes can make gum disease worse. There is also a lot of emerging evidence linking gum disease with other serious health issues like heart problems.

What do Dental Hygienists do?

Dental hygienists are experts in the prevention and treatment of gum disease, and our
hygienist’s primary role is in the prevention of dental disease. The hygienist will discuss with you the factors involved in tooth decay and gum disease, clean your teeth, and show you the best way to keep your mouth healthy.

Your Dental Hygiene visit

Your hygienist will thoroughly clean and polish your teeth to remove the tartar build-up.
Even if you brush your teeth every day, this is not enough to prevent the gradual build-up of tartar on the teeth.

Our hygienists will demonstrate effective plaque removal techniques, recommend a range of oral hygiene aids, and help you develop a more efficient cleaning regime at home. Regular dental care check-ups and professional dental cleanings twice a year are part of the dental hygiene process, more for patients with gum disease. Getting professional dental cleaning sessions helps prevent and detect tooth decay and other diseases early and keeps your teeth looking bright and clean.

Our dental hygiene team

Our Dental Therapists/Hygienists, Laura, Adam and Beth work with our dentists Kevin and Scott closely to ensure you treatment is tailored for you. Together, they’re here to help patients keep their teeth healthy and beautiful for life, and their role is a vital part of our service.

Holistic approach

To make sure your total dental health is best cared for, appointments with our dedicated Dental Hygiene and Therapy team are made by special referral from the dentists and start at £79.

The range of services we offer include:

Dental hygiene instruction and advice on the best products for your individual needs

Assessment and treatment of gum disease and advice on lifestyle issues relating to
oral health

Professional tartar and plaque removal to give a fresh, bright smile and help you clean teeth more easily

Air-polishing to remove even the most stubborn of stains on teeth

Fissure sealants. A protective layer of resin is bonded to the biting surfaces of back
teeth to prevent decay
